Overview
Trezor hardware wallets keep private keys offline while letting you manage crypto via the Trezor Suite app or supported web apps. Before setup, always go to the official start page and download official software — do not follow random third-party links.
What you’ll need
- Your physical Trezor device (Model One, Model T, or Safe models)
- A modern computer or phone, USB cable, and an internet connection for Trezor Suite
- A safe place to write and store your wallet backup (paper or a secure metal backup)
Step 1 — Go to the Official Start Page
Always begin at the official onboarding page to download Trezor Suite and follow guided setup instructions. This ensures you get verified software and avoids phishing sites.
Step 2 — Download & verify Trezor Suite
For the best experience, download the Trezor Suite desktop or use the web app. Verify the download when prompted (checksums or official GitHub releases are provided). Installing verified software reduces risk from tampered installers.
Quick notes on verification
Trezor provides download pages and GitHub releases to confirm file integrity. If you use the desktop app, follow the official verification steps in the guides.
Step 3 — Initialize the device
Connect the Trezor, follow the on-device prompts, and either create a new wallet or recover an existing wallet using a wallet backup. The device will often require firmware installation during first setup — follow on-screen instructions exactly.
Set a PIN
During initialization you’ll be asked to set a PIN. Choose a PIN that is memorable to you but not guessable. The PIN is stored only on the device — it prevents unauthorized use if the device is stolen.
Create and secure your wallet backup
Trezor will present your wallet backup (formerly called a recovery seed). Write it down carefully, keep it offline, and never share it or store it digitally. Treat it as the single key to your funds.
Backup best practices
- Write the words in order on the provided card or a trusted metal backup product.
- Store copies in physically separate, secure locations (safe deposit box, home safe).
- Never enter the backup into a computer, phone, email, or cloud storage.
Step 4 — Firmware updates and maintenance
Trezor devices may prompt for firmware updates; updating through Trezor Suite is the official method. Keep your device firmware current — updates patch security improvements or new coin support.
Troubleshooting common issues
If the device doesn’t respond, try a different cable or USB port, ensure Trezor Suite is up-to-date, and follow official troubleshooting guides. If you suspect tampering on arrival, contact official support immediately.
Security reminders
Remember: Trezor support will never ask for your wallet backup words. Phishing or social-engineering attempts often try to trick users into revealing backups or PINs. Always validate emails and support contacts through the official site.
Regular habits
- Verify website URLs before downloading or connecting your device.
- Keep desktop/mobile software up to date.
- Consider a metal backup for extreme durability of your wallet backup.
